The Old Woman At The Park

There I stood in the middle of the most beautiful park I'd ever seen. It was day time, from what I could tell it was high noon, for no shadows were cast. I stood there looking about, taking in the beauty of the magnificent park, when I noticed that the park itself was no more than a very large clearing in the middle of a dense forest. I could not tell if this park was in a major city, or perhaps near some small town, or village.

In fact the more I looked about, the more I realized this park was unlike any I'd seen before. The park started to feel unnatural, something was amiss. It was then that I noticed there were no sounds of wild life, nor the sound of wind rushing through the trees, or the sound of laughter and people conversing. It was as though I had lost the ability to hear. As I walked around the park, I Began to feel uneasy as I thought to myself, if this is indeed a park, surly there would be other people, or other signs of life?

This uneasy feeling had grown to be unbearable, until I came across what looked to be a brand new off white park bench with its back turned towards me. Setting upon this park bench was a woman, she wore a brown and white dress, that stopped just above her shoes and a white bonnet. Judging by her clothing I placed her to be from the 1800's or an earlier era. Those few facts about her should have caused me stop in my tracks and question these things or possibly walk away.

I dismissed these things as I was relieved to find that I was not the only person in this strange place. This relief was short lived however as I finally made my way around the park bench, the feeling of unease had returned. When I looked into her face, there was nothing about it that should have unnerved me, as it was the face of kindly old woman, worn and wrinkled. As I stood before her she seemed not to notice me.

She was looking down at her arms, with which she cradled an infant wrapped in a blanket. As I moved closer to speak to her, she suddenly smiled a strange twisted smile, leaned down and bit a peace of the infants face off. I reeled back in horror at what was happening I wanted to run, I wanted to scream, I wanted to look away, but I couldn't. I was frozen in place helpless as I watched her continue to chew on the infants face.

I awoke with a start when I hit the floor, having fallen out of bed. My heart was pounding, I could still see the old woman, as though the vision were burnt into my retinas, as I tried to catch my breath I began blinking and rubbing my eyes until the image dissolved away. when I finally got my wits about me, I slowly climbed back into bead, and pulled the covers about me. I was unable to sleep, for I feared I would once again meet the old woman in the park.
The End.
